US Justice Department Joins Lawsuit to Stop California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
