Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.
We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a intense examination about how we choose to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
